Several of the Greek islands are so close that you can set out in the morning and be back in the evening. The ride out there is an experience in itself. It starts at the port of Piraeus, just 11 km (7 miles) from Athens where you can board fast catamarans, hydrofoils or larger ships to jet you off to the Argosaronic and Cycladic islands. Tour agencies can provide you with organized itineraries, should you prefer a guided-tour-type visit to the many archaeological sites found on many of the islands. It is always nice however to just get off, walk and explore the small beaches, tavernas and delightful things that only you will deem special and memorable.
