Summer in Athens

Summer in Athens is no doubt one of the most exciting times of the year. The mood of the summer vacation dominates every day and every night. The outdoor restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs that line the Mediterranean are tropical paradises built directly on the seacoast. Top DJs at these venues spin the hottest beats and top chefs mix the healthiest ingredients. The town is abuzz. Smiling visitors from all over the world enjoy the (over 100) outdoor or therina cinemas, seaside tavernas, ancient amphitheater and the nearby islands that have made Greece one of the world's top summer destinations.

Tip: Stop in on the weekend of August 15th when the mass exodus of Athenians to the islands occurs, leaving you Athens all to yourself!

Athens is always ready to facilitate this positive energy through the many festivals, events, concerts and outdoor revelries that have made Greece one of the top destinations for summer.

The summer culture kick-off begins with The Athens Festival bringing the best of the arts -- music, theater, dance and drama -- to its various theaters, many of which are ancient monuments and sites. The star of the festival is the Odeon of Herodes Atticus, which draws major artists from all over the world.

The Lycabettus Theater, another outdoor amphitheater atop Lycabettus Hill, is a spectacular arena that hosts a variety of performances and rock concerts.

Racing car enthusiasts be sure to check into Athens on June 1 for the Rally Acropolis.

The Rockwave Festival in July is the largest annual rock concert series in Greece with three days of consecutive performances of well-known bands from all over the world.

Gaining popularity in recent years is the Dimotiko Festival or Local Municipalities Festival where local neighborhoods including Virona, Rematias Chalandri, Glyfada and Papagou host well-attended concerts and events.

The three-day Anti-Racism Festival, begun in 1996, also enjoys a popular following in its effort to raise awareness of the work of immigrant artists and worldwide human rights organizations.
