The center of the center and its charms
With the multicultural Omonia as a starting point, and walking up Stadiou Street, one reaches the Museum of the City of Athens and the Old Parliament, which today hosts the Historical Museum. On the opposite side of the street is the Bank of Greece. Its monumental entrance is on Panepistimiou (El. Venizelou) Street. On the other side of the street three neoclassical buildings predominate, the Academy, the University and the Library, as well as other buildings such as the Catholic Church of St Dionysius, the unusual building of the Opthalmic Clinic and the Iliou Melathron, the house of the German archaeologist Schliemann, which today is home to the Numismatic Museum. For a short break the best place is the cafeteria (closed and open-air) of the Cultural Center of the Municipality of Athens on Akadimias Street.
