In 1848, on one of the central streets of Athens, the duchess of Piacenza built her mansion, which now hosts the Byzantine Museum. It is easily accessible by underground, and it should not be left out as it contains the largest collection of portable Byzantine icons in the world. A short way away art lovers can visit the National Gallery and admire the work of mainly, but not solely, Greek artists.
