Cirque Eloize at the Badminton Theater

The new show from Cirque Eloize takes us back to the innocence of childhood through a unique theatrical circus. The "animal-less" circus, following the tradition which was born and established in French-speaking Canada by the creators of Cirque du Soleil and of our own Cirque Eloize. Daniele Finzi Pasca sat in his backyard in Lugano, Switzerland, waiting in anguish for the first summer rain. As a child, he felt real freedom only when his clothes were soaked with rain, and he could keep playing undisturbed in the small water lakes. Today, the 44 year old director, choreographer, writer, clown and moving spirit behind Rain, sets up a performance along with 13 members of the Canadian group Cirque Eloize, based on a nostalgic yearning for his childhood years and recalling images from his past memories.

The protagonists of this acrobatic theatre performance play themselves in a story that unfolds on a theatre stage during a rehearsal. As the artists meet, their glances reveal erotic stories, hide secret passions and express familiarity. The main difference is of course that these actors can also balance on a beam, hang upside down from a suspended ring, impress with their juggling tricks, swing along a wheel and amaze with their spontaneous acrobatic tricks in a shallow pool of water.

For many who are familiar with this group of inventive Canadians, having watched the two previous shows in Athens : Excentricus (2002, Athens College Theater) and Nomade (2003, Big Top Theatre), and for those who will come to enjoy it for the first time, the director Frinzi Pasca describes Rain as "tender, simple, direct, full of sensuality and hope".
