Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi
From 19 December until 6 January, the Greek National Opera will present the world-famous opera Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. A work full of passion, revenge, love, as well as popular melodies such as La donna è mobile and Bella figlia dell'amore is presented in a new production that brings to life the intriguing story of the libertine Duke of Mantua, the innocent Gilda and the hunchback jester Rigoletto.
A melodrama in three acts, Rigoletto is inspired by the play Le Roi S'Amuse (1832) by Victor Hugo (1802-1885). The poetic text was written by Francesco Maria Piave (1810-1876). The plot revolves around the love of Gilda, daughter of the hunchback jester Rigoletto, for the dissolute Duke of Mantua, who is introduced to her as a poor student. In revenge for the lost honour of his daughter, Rigoletto plots the murder of the Duke. Upon uncovering her father's plans, Gilda decides to save her beloved and to sacrifice herself by taking his place. In this new production by the Greek National Opera, the action is transported to Italy of 1938.
This masterpiece that has always been part of the repertory of opera houses throughout the world is making a comeback in Athens for a few memorable performances.
