Eugene Onegin

The Greek National Opera will present the ballet Eugene Onegin in Athens, Greece on 6,7, 9, 10, 13 and 14 February at the Olympia Theatre. Pushkin's fictional hero and selected compositions by Tchaikovsky have inspired this unique interpretation by Irek Muchamedov, the director of the Greek National Opera Ballet. The production is being repeated for a second consecutive year following its great success last season.

The plot involves the love of Tatyana, a young and innocent young woman from the country, for city sophisticate Eugene Onegin who is trying to escape his tiresome life. Onegin at first is unmoved by the young woman's pure feelings and shows no intention of committing himself. In addition, he wrongly interprets his friend Lensky's reaction when he pretends to flirt with Lensky's fiancée (Tatyana's sister). The two men face off in a duel, and Onegin kills Lensky. When he realises his mistake about Tatiana years later, it is too late, as she has already married the affluent and much older Prince Gremin and she is not inclined to change her life.

The ballet will be performed by the principal dancers, soloists, coryphées and the corps de ballet of the Greek National Opera Ballet.
