Puccini's Madame Butterfly at Club EDO
Madame Butterfly leaves the traditional opera stage behind to come closer to the audience. The performance of the popular opera by Italian composer Giacomo Puccini will be presented at Club EDO in a specially designed space reminiscent of the Far East. It is an unusual but particularly functional stage adapted to the needs of the work, which is set in Japan in the early 20th century. See Madame Butterfly at Club EDO in Athens, Greece from 27 January to 28 March.
The libretto is based on the tragic love between a geisha and an American naval officer in Nagasaki. Cio-Cio San (whom everyone calls Butterfly) breaks off all ties with her family and country's traditions to end up isolated and committing the ultimate act of suicide according to Japanese custom - harakiri.
World-famous soprano Jenny Drivala will sing the lead role but is also the director of the work. "Our goal is to make opera more accessible to the general public. That is the reason we chose to stage this in a smaller and more hospitable space where the audience can have better visual and aural contact with the events. The thoroughly Japanese setting that has been created will make the audience feel they are also a part of the action," she said.
