Exhibition by Marios Spiliopoulos at National Museum of Contemporary Art
The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece presents a new installation of the work "Landscape of Being" (1997) by Marios Spiliopoulos as part of its "Work of the Month" series featuring a selection of works from the museum's permanent collection. Spiliopoulos is inspired by the narrative Landscape of Being by writer and artist Nikos Gabriel Pentzikis (1908-1993), which is included in his book Mother Thessaloniki (1970). The installation will be on display until 5 September.
In his text, Pentzikis undertakes an interior journey of self-consciousness to identify parts of his body with his birthplace, Thessaloniki. Spiliopoulos' work of the same name consists of a wooden table and broken chair balanced on glasses standing in a metal tank full of water. The entire text has been written out on the table surface.
For this installation at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, the artist has copied the text of Landscape of Being on the walls of the space housing the work through an arduous process similar to a spiritual exercise to create an environment that takes elements from the personal and literary world of the writer. Along with the installation, three new videos created by the artist in 2010 are presented. These videos feature an aged man reciting the entire Landscape of Being text, as three women and a child repeat the first and last phrases of the story.
