Antiques

Antique shopping can be very expensive or very affordable.  The streets in Monastiraki, Plaka, Thiseio and on the coastal town of Pireaus have many stores that carry antiques and old furniture and objects that may be of interest.  And of course, there are many more exclusive galleries and shops with perhaps more refined goods.  Here are some suggestions on where to go.

Monastiraki Flea Market (www.fleamarket-monastiraki.gr) - A must-visit shopping destination especially on Sunday's when additional vendors exhibit their wares on Avissinias Square. For weekdays and Saturdays, some shops that sell antique furniture, paintings and objects in that area include Motakis (www.antiquesmotakis.gr); and Palaiopoleion Alekos (www.alekos-antiques.gr).

On the southern coast in Pireaus, another large market with vendors takes place on Sundays on Alipedou Street.

Also: Auction houses Petros Vergos (www.vergosauctions.com) and Kapopoulos (www.kapopoulosart.gr) are known for their expertise in auctions, namely painting, rare books, coins and other historical treasures.
