ROOMS2012

Kappatos Gallery in Athens, Greece organises and presents from Thursday January 26th until February 12th, 2012, for twelfth time since 1999, the annual contemporary art exhibition ROOMS2012, at St.George Lycabettus Hotel, Dexameni, Kolonaki.

Twenty three Curators, Art Historians, Architects, select one artist or a group of artists each, whose work will be presented individually in the rooms of the hotel's 5th floor. Thirty Greek and foreign emerging first time shown artists are participating, showing a wide variety of works in fine art, sound installations, photography, theatrical installations, performances, projections and more, transforming the rooms according to their personal artistic idiom and aesthetics. This environment is perfect to present and document the contemporary fine art trends, creating a platform for a rich and meaningful dialogue.

The selection of a hotel as a venue for the exhibition was the result of contemporary art's need to claim its own private and yet simultaneously public space, working in harmony with the essence of today.

The hotel environment is the quintessential social hub within the city, a place to visit, a place to rest, a place to meet new people and to communicate. At this point, the art works will take on the role of visitors staying in the hotel. The social role of the hotel extends to include a cultural and communicative character as the artists take their first steps in the public sphere, exhibiting their work to visitors and guests, who will be present at the same time and will ‘cohabit' with these artworks.

Most artists create site-specific works, taking advantage of the hotel's hospitality, which is located in one of the most central and beautiful parts of the city. St. George Lycabettus hotel is a big supporter of this annual well-known cultural endeavor.
