1st Acropolis Half Marathon "Athens Run 2012"
Take a breath and join us in running the history of our city!
The first "Acropolis" Half Marathon is here! The "Athens Run 2012", organized for the first time, will be held on May 20 and will include the "Acropolis" Half Marathon and parallel races of 8 and 3 kilometers for both men and women, as well as 700 meter races for people with special needs. The Organization of Culture, Sports and Youth of the City of Athens and the Hellenic Association of Amateur Athletics (SEGAS) are the organizers of the event, aiming to establish the "Athens Run" as one of the most important sports institutions in Greece with wide popular participation, as well as to promote the city of Athens abroad through the following social motto: "Take a breath and join us in running the history of our city".
All races will start from the gates of the Panathenaic Stadium and will finish at the historic building of Zappeio. The Mayor of Athens, Yorgos Kaminis will initiate the start of the races of the Half Marathon Run (21.100 m.) and the parallel races of 8 kilometers at 09:00 am. The 700 meter race will start at 10:30 a.m. at the crossing point of Vasilissis Sofias and Amalias Streets, while the 3 kilometers race will start from the gates of the Panathenaic Stadium at 11:00 am.
The runners will be electronically timed, will have the opportunity to receive a Special Medal and Certificate of Participation, as well as isotonic drinks at supply stations along the route. Furthermore, there will be supporting infrastructure at the start and finish points, arches, signaling and railings demarcating and protecting the races.
Only adults have the right to participate in the Half Marathon, whereas for the races of 8 and 3 kilometers the participants must have completed 12 and 9 years of age respectively.
Medals and certificates will be awarded to the first three winners of the "Acropolis" Half Marathon and the 8 kilometer run for both men and women. In all races a cup will be awarded to the first winner, while all the runners who finish will be presented with a symbolic certificate and medal. Other special awards will be given to the first winners and to the biggest in number group participation of a School, Association, Union, e.t.c.
