Organised by the Athens Film Society, the 16th Athens International Film Festival - Opening Nights will bring the best of international cinema to Athens, Greece. For 11 days, from September 15 to 26, the heart of cinema will beat in Athens. The festival was first launched in September 1995 and has continued with great success until now. The movie theatres accommodating the festival are the Attikon Cinemax Class, Apollon Cinemax Class and Danaos 1 & 2 theatres.
The National Museum of Contemporary Art in Athens, Greece (EMST) is staging the first museum solo exhibition of renowned young Greek artist Kostis Velonis from 11 May to 5 September. Velonis is considered to be one of the most important Greek artists of his generation. His sculptural work often refers to historical events and art-historical movements and the focus is on political utopias and the failure of ideology.

Highlights of this year's festival include two important openings for Greek cinema, a collection of 20 rare cult films and specials dedicated to two of the greatest contemporary film pioneers, Danish director Jørgen Leth and Polish filmmaker Zbigniew Rybczynski.
